About the VTNE
The Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE®) evaluates the competency of veterinary technicians. Most states and provinces require a passing score for a veterinary technician to be credentialed.
The AAVSB’s Role
We own and administer the VTNE, and we provide your score to the state or province in which you’ll practice, but we don’t license or credential veterinary technicians. Credentials are provided by the state or province in which you practice.
We do maintain a Board and Agency Directory so you can find out how to get in touch with your state or provincial agency to get more information about getting licensed. You can also check our Getting Your License page for a general overview of the process.
Prerequisite
Verify Your Eligibility
Before you can apply to take the VTNE, you’ll need to verify that you’re eligible.
The verification process can take time to complete, so it’s best to start it as soon as possible. You may be asked to provide a school transcript, state-specific forms, fees, etc.
