Maintaining Your License

What to Expect

The requirements to maintain your license depends entirely on the jurisdiction (the state or province) in which you’re licensed. At the AAVSB, we don’t issue or renew licenses, but we do provide a Board and Agency Directory you can use to find links to your jurisdiction’s online information. We also offer services that help with common components of license maintenance, such as continuing education tracking.

Continuing Education

All jurisdictions require continuing education to renew your license, though the number of hours required varies. We have a tool to help you check the specific requirements for your jurisdiction.

At the AAVSB, we support continuing education in three ways: the RACE® Program, access to a catalog of approved CE courses, and the RACEtrack® tool, which helps you record and submit your continuing education hours.

Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE)

At the AAVSB, we set standards for continuing education through our RACE program, and we work with continuing education providers to ensure that the courses they’re offering meet those standards.

RACE-approved veterinary continuing education courses are reviewed and accepted by the majority of veterinary licensing boards for renewal purposes. Learn more here.

Find Courses with CE Broker

CE Broker is an online course catalog that allows you to browse a wide variety of RACE-approved veterinary continuing education courses. Search and filter by jurisdiction, subject area, keyword, and other criteria to find the courses that are right for you. Learn more here.

Track CE with RACEtrack

RACEtrack is a free service that allows veterinary professionals to record CE coursework in a single centralized database. You can then download a completed CE transcript to send to your credentialing agency or, in some jurisdictions, have the transcript sent electronically directly from the AAVSB.

Build a Professional Record with a MyAAVSB Account

A MyAAVSB account provides a secure database to store documentation related to your license, making it easier to renew or transfer it.

Having used any of our services means you already have a MyAAVSB account. Creating one is free if you haven’t already.

Understanding the Disciplinary Process

Another important component of maintaining your license is to understand the statutes and regulations in your jurisdictions that could lead to disciplinary action.

Our Board and Agency Directory can point you to your jurisdiction’s specific information. But, overall, the top reasons for disciplinary action* include:

Improper record keeping
Negligence or malpractice
Unprofessional conduct

A violation of narcotic or prescription regulations or substance abuse
Practicing without a license
Failure to complete the required continuing education
